Birds do not need a perch to enter the nest, they have such precise flying skills that they can land on the edge of the entrance opening. If you live near the beach, say in Hermosa Beach or Santa Monica, it's unlikely that you'll have much luck with a bird house. The reason is that there likely aren't many cavity nesting birds residing in these seaside areas that are also largely suburban. This isn't to say that you'll come up empty if you put one up. Useful gloves for cleaning gourds and a very nice wood putty, great for unique gourd craft projects.

Sand the gourd smooth and paint with an oil-based primer. Paint the gourd house with white exterior enamel paint with a nylon brush. (Do not use water-based latex paint because it will peel.) Apply two coats.
They can add a pop of color to your garden or porch. You use modeling clay for beaks and dowel rods for legs. Paint a wooden base blue and add water lilies to take the decoration a notch higher. Besides making a birdhouse, you can use it as a dipper or spoon. You can also use it to create drinking vessels and other decorative items. It grows well on a trellis and produces a long, beautiful handle.

The male flowers shed their pollen and fall off, while the females are fertilized and fruit. It’s not uncommon for most of the early season flowers to be male. However, some hybrid varieties produce female flowers first. Until there are both male and female blossoms at the same time, there can’t be pollination followed by fruiting. Established plants should do fine with an inch of water per week in the absence of rain. During a very dry spell, you may need to be a bit more generous.
These plants do not overwinter since cold temperatures kill the vines. If frost threatens before the fruits have fully matured, cover the plants lightly to shield them from the frost. This step is optional, but it adds a nice touch to the birdhouse. Drill a hole beneath the entrance using the ⅜ inch drill bit. Angle the hole a little upwards to compensate for the curve of the vegetable.

I’ve had beautiful squash grow on plants whose leaves were thoroughly damaged by powdery mildew, for example. At about this time, you may find that your gourds are getting bulky. While the stems are quite sturdy, some folks like to provide added support with a soft sling. The same goes for transplants – plant two in each mound, to give the vines plenty of room to spread as they grow. When you have seedlings with two sets of true leaves, thin the number of plants per mound to two. If you wind up with two extremely vigorous vines, you can always thin them to one later, if you like.
How long does it take to grow a birdhouse gourd
Add more phosphorus to the fertilizer mix to encourage more female flowers to fruit. Luffa flowers are yellow, appearing very similar to squash flowers. Male flowers usually cluster, while female flowers are singular and look like small fruiting bodies before blooming.
Sow in late spring when the soil temperature is at least 70℉ and frost danger has passed. Hang the gourd in a sunny spot or place it on newspaper in a warm dry spot (such as an attic or basement) for 3 to 6 months. If the gourd is lying on a flat surface, be sure to frequently turn it. The gourd will begin to mold as it dries—don’t throw it out!
You get gourds for building birdhouses in different sizes, shapes, and colors. It is surprisingly easy to grow gourds and transform them into birdhouses. I kept one for myself and gave others away as gifts. Like most squash, gourds, and other members of the Cucurbitaceae family, birdhouse gourds grow best in full sun and rich, well-drained soil chock full of compost. I drill two holes near the top with the twist bit to add a wire hanger and three or more holes on the bottom for drainage. I then drill a larger hole with the hole saw on one side of my gourd for the birds to enter.
Luffa fruits start green but ripen and turn brown. Pick them in the green stage if you eat the young fruits. Brown is good when it comes to growing luffa fruits for sponges. Pick them all off the vine before the first frost. Pollination of female flowers occurs primarily through bees.

You simply let the gourd soak for about an hour, scrub it with the steel wool and dish detergent/water mix and then let it dry again. Just be careful when applying pressure with the hole bit.
Drill 5 small holes in a circle around the base for drainage and then sand the outside of your gourd until smooth. Once you have created the hole, remove the inside seeds and membranes. Don’t worry if you leave some behind – the birds won’t care. The diameter you make the hole depends on which kind of bird you want to take up residence in your new birdhouse.

Luffa is native to Asia and grows best in hot weather, acidic soil, and at least six hours of sunlight. The unique luffa gourd fruits are eaten or dried for use as natural sponges. They take about 90 to 120 days to grow and up to 200 days until it is ready to be harvested for sponges. A few small holes will need to be drilled on the under side of the gourd for drainage as well as two holes on either side at the very top of the neck. Those last two holes will be for threading a cord or wire through so that you can hang the birdhouses outside.

Mark a center point along the outermost part of the curve so the hole faces straight out—not towards the sky or the ground. The hole should measure 2-1/8 inches and can be easily and quickly drilled with the proper-size hole saw. (Be sure to wear a face mask.) You can also use a keyhole saw to cut the entrance by hand. If you do, it’s best to cut the hole immediately after washing the gourd, while it’s still wet.

I know this sounds a bit gross and really it can be during the drying, but once the gourd is properly cleaned and finished it is well sanitized and sealed. Your gourd is left with the beautiful patterns from the molds but no live yucky spores. Try to remember this when you have a bunch of yucky gourds drying.
Thread the wire through two of the holes directly across from each other and hang it from a support line, below a martin house or on a specially made gourd rack. Hang the gourd 10 to 15 feet high, with the entrance hole facing an open area. The gourd will swing, making it less attractive to nest competitors, such as starlings. Get started this spring by planting some seeds and next year, you too will be able to make your own gourd bird house. So, you plant your gourd seeds, they grow and flower.
These gourds can be decorated like masks and hung against your wall. They all have a coin slot and rubber stopper on the bottom. Place objects that will hold the dowel perpendicular to the entrance and allow the glue to dry at least overnight. Sand the ragged edges of the hole to a smooth point. Using the finer grit sandpaper and a gentle touch, smoothen out the shell of the sandpaper. The higher the grit of the sandpaper is, the finer it is and the smoother a surface it can create.
Use a pencil to mark a center point along the outermost part of the curve so the hole faces straight out. And if you created a bird house, you may be rewarded by beneficial birds visiting your garden like these. And gently clean seeds and debris out of the inside. Soak the gourd for 15 minutes in hot soapy water, then scrape it with a dull knife to remove the outer skin and mold.
And while these lists look long and intimidating, infestations and infections may be minimal and do little damage to your developing gourds. As we’ve said, there are numerous hard-shelled gourd shapes so be sure to read your seed packets to find the ones you want. To maintain even moisture, it’s best to water in the morning.
The foliage consists of fuzzy green leaves and white blossoms. There are both male and female flowers, and only the females produce fruit. Siceraria has a long growing season of up to 180 days. Byhower also noted the success of the Southern California Bluebird Club in attracting Western Bluebirds to the Los Angeles area. Apparently, they've used bluebird boxes to great success at places like Ken Malloy/Harbor Regional Park in Wilmington.
Museums should be easily accessible for all types of people, not only from a location and travel perspective, but also in terms of accessing and traveling through the building. Employees can wear uniforms to that they can be easily identified and trained on how to handle emergencies and protocols that should be followed. Circulation through the museum may take a linear form, where there is a clear beginning, middle or end.

But accepting a dialogue doesn’t mean you have to do what people tell you to do, but you have to understand. That’s why writing or making a picture or being an architect is not that different. To mark International Museum Day, we've selected 10 museums from the Dezeen archive that were designed by famous architects or are otherwise architecturally significant.

In 1973 the original building and its 1933 eastern wing addition, were listed as heritage buildings, complicating the task of architect Daniel Libeskind when he won the architecture bid to add an expansion. Libeskind’s ‘Michael Lee-Chin Crystal’ extension opened in 2007 to mixed reviews, having considerably exceeded time and budget constraints. The Deconstructivist ‘Crystal’ of aluminum and glass stands atop a steel frame that holds the structure away from the existing walls and allows for an increased attendance of the museum — aiming to reach nearly 1.5 million visitors per year.

There should be an appropriate and optimal use of materials to cause the least impact on the environment. It is better to have a central atrium connecting all themed areas so that people can choose to visit parts that capture their intrigue. There should be several books to initiate discussions, establish workshops, or just for the visitor to ponder over what he has seen. Brooker also points to a more unexpected direction for exhibition design. “The work being undertaken in retail design is now a fundamental aspect of exhibition design,” he says.
Events and workshops
Circulation could also be a loop, where the visitor is led through the collections and finishes back at the beginning. Other options include core and satellites, where there are more central areas with small display rooms branching off from them. Emma Walshaw is the founder of First In Architecture and Detail Library, and has written a number of books aiming to facilitate a better understanding of construction and detailing.

The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) announced Madrid-based practice Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos as the winner of the international design competition Reimagining the Dallas Museum of Art. The project was selected out of 154 submissions from around the world, and a shortlist featuring internationally recognized names such as David Chipperfield Architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Johnston Marklee, Michael Maltzan Architecture and Weiss/Manfredi. A museum is a storehouse of aged artifacts that highlight the grandeur of preserved memorabilia from various stages of human evolution. A lot goes into the creation of these public structures to make them the heart and soul of the city. From preservation to environmental concern, there are numerous things to keep in mind while designing a museum. When New York City’s Guggenheim Museum created an outpost in Bilbao, Spain in the mid-1990s Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry was chosen to design the building. Gehry crafted his iconic swirling metallic sculptural building on the Estuary of Bilbao, creating at the same time, a brand new symbol for the Spanish city.

Situated in the city of NiterĂ³i, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the NiterĂ³i Contemporary Art Museum is one of the city’s main landmarks. Perched upon Boa Viagem Beach, the land for the museum is the subject of a political scandal in which the land was purchased at an extremely low price and then was later sold for over 1,250,000 US dollars in 1996. Despite the scandal surrounding the museum, the building’s architecture is undoubtedly iconic. Designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, with the assistance of structural engineer Bruno Contarini, the intergalactic structure stands at 16 metres high with a cupola of 50 metres in diameter. The building has often been likened to a UFO, as the saucer-shaped modernist structure is set on a cliffside; appearing to have just landed on earth for the first time. Designed by self-taught Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Texas opened in 2002 and was an instant success in its serene poise and coherence.
The development of cultural infrastructure in India has historically been a government endeavor, often resulting in a state of stagnation. The past two decades have seen a noticeable shift in the country’s cultural landscape. Increased interest from private institutions has paved the way for plenty of cultural projects to be initiated, usually in partnership with city authorities. These contemporary projects aim to celebrate the richness of India’s historical and contemporary culture, becoming prize destinations for the rising middle class. Your itinerary wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this public structure to experience and learn about the local history. Whether you feel bored or would love a second visit will depend on its planning, making museum design one of the favorite thesis topics for students of architecture.
Both institutions will decide what exhibitions will travel to Las Vegas in a process expected to unfold organically as the collaboration develops, Govan and Harmon say. Because the museums are relatively close in proximity, Govan hopes the shows can travel in electric vehicles to reduce the carbon footprint of the exchange. “Women Defining Women in Contemporary Art of the Middle East and Beyond,” “Kimono for a Modern Age,” the museum’s Robert Mapplethorpe collection or its collection of California photography could go. Las Vegas, with a metro area population of nearly 3 million, is one of the largest cities in the country without an art museum. So it was with great fanfare that the city revealed in December that it had approved an “exclusive negotiating agreement” with the Las Vegas Museum of Art to continue work on plans for a proposed 90,000-square-foot, three-story building in Symphony Park. It may be desired or extremely undesirable and your design will be molded according to it.
Special care should be taken to ensure it is accessible by people in a wheelchair, with a ramp as the preferred method of changing levels. There should be displays that are easily interpreted by braille users, and the design layout must have public facilities and seating spaces seamlessly integrated. By contrast, the galleries housing Lange’s Depression-era images were pared back, with bare stud walls, and skirting conspicuous by its absence. Most of these details were subtle, but more noticeable were the shadows cast by wooden slats across the open ceiling of a gallery containing her images of the internment of Japanese-Americans during the Second World War. Working with the Barbican’s lighting designer, Guthrie says the aim was to mirror the shadows in the photographs of the camps. Guthrie adds that the team wanted the “idea of containment” to be recognisable in the space, with the proviso that the spaces were not “overly themed”, which can be “insensitive to the works”.
The other finalists are DLR Group, Frank Gehry Partners, Quinn Evans, and BIG. Organised by the Naval Heritage History and Command’s (NHHC), the competition’s aim is to create a modern museum for Naval veterans and the public, a new building and ceremonial courtyard to reflect the Navy’s values and legacy. The campus would consist of approximately 270,000 square feet, with 100,000 square feet of gallery space. The Navy’s preferred location for the museum is on a site adjacent to the Washington Navy Yard.
In honor of International Museum Day, we’ve selected 23 stand-out museums from our database, with each ArchDaily editor explaining what makes these buildings some of the best examples of museum architecture out there. Which explains a recent announcement that LACMA is partnering with the upcoming Las Vegas Museum of Art to share both expertise and, eventually, its collection. India hosts a multitude of museums, art galleries, public libraries, theaters, and heritage centers. Nevertheless, many of these structures remain abandoned and fossilized like the artifacts they intend to present and protect.
Some exhibits get deteriorated over time from the sun’s direct exposure. As preservation is the ultimate motive, it is essential to eliminate natural light and have artificial lighting around these displays. In some other cases such as in countries where the climate is extremely cold, natural lighting may be best suited to cut down on HVAC costs. After studying the genre, it is good to decide the scale of interactivity for your museum.
Hodgson told FOX5 the company responsible, You Call It, We Haul It, hasn't contacted her. "It's been boarded up about 15 years, and we keep it boarded, covered, grass cut, and the yard is clean. The taxes are paid and everything is up on it," Hodgson told FOX5. Hodgson said a neighbor called while she was away and asked if someone had been hired to tear down the vacant house. The U.S. Department of Transportation number for the work truck outside the home, which was listed in the police report, is registered to the Atlanta-based company that Hodgson said destroyed her house, You Call It We Haul It. The company did not respond to requests for comment from The Post but said in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta that it is investigating the incident. On Sept. 15, Hodgson, a retired school chef, said she lost that connection to her husband forever.
Cost to knock down extensions or additions
Ms Hodgson sent a family member over, who asked the workers for a permit. "He said 'well I want to see a permit or something' and the guy pulled it out and said 'Oh I'm at the wrong address' and he just packs everything up and leaves and the house is just (destroyed) down and gone," Hodgson said. "The guy pulled it out and said, 'Oh I'm at the wrong address,' and he just packs everything up and leaves and the house is just down and gone," Hodgson told Fox 5. The home was vacant at the time, per Fox 5, and Hodgson has not been left homeless by the alleged mistake.

"Usually, on trash day, I walk around the lot and clean up the yard ,and this bright yellow sign was in the middle of my backyard, and I noticed it said 'Stop Work Order, '" Hodgson said. "It said I had until the 16th to fix it, clean it up, and get it all done, and have the proper permits." When the neighbor confronted them, Hodgson said, the workers got nasty. "He told her to shut up and mind her own business," Hodgson said.
Woman returns from holiday to find her Atlanta home mistakenly demolished
The emotional toll of losing a place filled with years of memories cannot be underestimated. Her residence had been inadvertently demolished by the very company that was supposed to handle a separate demolition project nearby. The fateful incident occurred on October 22, 2023, when Susan Hodgson returned from her vacation, anticipating the comfort of her own home, only to be met with a devastating sight. “I’m just left with a big old mess,” she told FOX 5, who investigated the case after Hodgson revealed the contractors initially refused to play ball and fix their mistake.
House Accidentally Demolished ...
Monroe purchased the single-story, 2,900-sq-ft (270-sq-meter) house in the early 1960s for $75,000 after the end of her third marriage to playwright Arthur Miller, according to the Times. It was the only residence the actress, who spent part of her childhood in an orphanage and foster care, ever independently owned. The final home of Marilyn Monroe – and the only residence she ever owned independently – will remain standing for now after Los Angeles officials intervened to block the property’s demolition. Such a situation is undoubtedly a nightmare for any homeowner, and the emotional toll it has taken on Susan and her family is immeasurable. The consequences of this tragic incident are far-reaching for Susan Hodgson. Not only has she lost her home, but she is now faced with the daunting task of rebuilding her life from scratch.
Hodgson said she's filed a report with police and has talked with lawyers but that they remain in limbo so far. "I said 'no' and she said, 'Well, there's someone over here who just demolished the whole house and tore it all down,'" Hodgson recalled. Consider water damage, which is one of the most common and costly home insurance claims — and one that could spike in severity if you’re away from your property on vacation. Shortly after the demolition, Hodgson noticed a “Stop Work Order” from Atlanta's Department of City Planning, giving her two weeks to “fix it, clean it up, and get it all done, and have the proper permits” — all for a project she never wanted.

Commercial building demolition companies use heavy machinery, decreasing the cost for larger projects. The property, which features a guest house and swimming pool, was purchased in 2017 for $7.25m by Glory of the Snow LLC, then managed by a hedge fund executive, the Los Angeles Times reported. It was sold to the Glory of the Snow Trust for $8.35m earlier this year.
The news that the new owners of Fifth Helena Drive, where Monroe died at age 36, filed for demolition permits had attracted widespread outrage. Los Angeles city councilwoman Traci Park said she received hundreds of calls urging her to save the Spanish colonial-style house in the city’s Brentwood neighborhood. After getting permits and inspections, demolishing a house takes 2 to 5 days on average for leveling, cleaning, and hauling away debris. Difficult site accessibility, asbestos removal, and large concrete foundations require more time.
Concrete patio demolition costs $1,500 to $2,800 on average or $5 to $10 per square foot, including disposal. Demolishing a stone-paver patio costs $1 to $5 per square foot, depending on whether the base is sand or cement. Enter the square footage of your house below to estimate the cost of demolition.
The neighbor went over to confront the worker, who replied in a harsh tone. “He told her to shut up and mind her own business,” Hodgson said. "The demolition of the property without the owner’s consent or knowledge is not a matter for the City of Atlanta. This is considered a civil matter between the property owner and the alleged responsible party."
The 60-year-old told The Washington Post she is still searching for answers about how this happened. To this day, she said the Atlanta-based company responsible, You Call It We Haul It, has yet to contact her. Hodgson said she’s filed a report with police and has talked with lawyers but that they remain in limbo so far. She sent a family member over to see what was going on and who asked to see a permit. When a person in charge at the site checked his permit, Hodgson said he admitted he was at the wrong address.
After renting out the house, Alvin Weintraub had it demolished in early 1994 and construction on a new home began shortly after. In 1996, the newly constructed home was completed, that he named Villa Bella, and obtained a new address for the property, Cielo Drive. The property had a main residence, guest house, pool, and 2-story garage. The main house had been occupied by various famous Hollywood and music industry figures. In 1994, both houses were demolished and a new house was constructed on the site, and the street address was changed to Cielo Drive.

When Melcher passed on signing the unstable, wannabe musician, it set Manson down a road of psychotic revenge. Melcher had a close working relationship with the Beach Boys — and a friendship with their drummer, Dennis Wilson. In a move less controversial in the 1960s, Wilson saw no harm in picking up hitchhikers and happened across Patricia Krenwinkel and Ella Jo Bailey. He could not have realized at the time that the women would change the trajectory of his life. But when Hollywood agent and businessman Rudolph Altobelli purchased the property in 1963, it came back into the limelight.

Park introduced a motion to initiate consideration of the home for historic preservation, and the council unanimously voted to move forward, prompting the city’s building department to revoke the demolition permit. The motion also prevents any major alterations to the property while the city reviews its potential status as a landmark. "It's been boarded up about 15 years, and we keep it boarded, covered, grass cut, and the yard is clean," she said.
Hodgson had received a call from a neighbor while she was away asking whether she hired someone to demolish the vacant home. Hodgson says the company that tore down the home claimed they had the wrong address. ATLANTA - The Atlanta woman who came home from vacation to find an older home on her property demolished without her permission is facing new troubles. Every time she looks out her kitchen window or leaves her house, Hodgson said she sees the mess next door. When Hodgson’s brother-in-law arrived and asked the workers for a permit, they realized they were at the wrong house, according to Hodgson. The average cost to knock down or bulldoze a house is $6,000 to $25,000. The average cost to tear down and rebuild a house is $125,000 to $450,000. Christopher Moore, a New Orleans artist, acquired the front door from the owner of the building, and then in September 2023 the door was sold in an auction to an undisclosed buyer for $127,000 by Julien’s Auctions. In statement to FOX5 -- which has a great news package about this -- that company (You Call It, We Haul It) says they're investigating the matter ... "I said 'no' and she said, 'Well there's someone over here who just demolished the whole house and tore the entire house down'," Ms Hodgson said. They sent a statement saying they are working to investigate the issue and say they are working on resolving the mishap.
Small pieces of the home — like bricks from the fireplace — sometimes show up on eBay. They are all that's left of the heinous events, and the property that caught too many celebrities in its web to even mention. French actress Michèle Morgan commissioned the 3,200 square foot home and 2,000 guest house, which sat on a 3.3-acre plot. Meant to evoke a European country cottage, the front yard featured a well; one publication called her bedroom "utterly French, feminine, and charming." But it's where the innocence of the 1960s counter-culture went to die — metaphorically speaking. It is the Los Angeles County home where the Manson family butchered Sharon Tate, along with her unborn son, and 4 others.
New troubles for an Atlanta woman whose home was demolished without her permission. FOX 5 first reported this story in October when the woman returned from vacation to find the older home on her property had been demolished by a construction company. Now, she says the city of Atlanta has threatened to issue citations because of the mess and for not filing the proper licenses. The family property, which had been boarded up but diligently cared for over the last 15 years, was mistakenly demolished after a local construction company went to the wrong address. The company did not immediately return a telephone message left Saturday.
In this photo provided by Susan Hodgson, her mistakenly demolished family home sits in a pile of lumber and debris in southwest Atlanta, Georgia, on Sept. 15, 2023. The mishap resulted in the complete destruction of Susan’s home, leaving her with the daunting task of rebuilding her life and her property from the ground up. According to Hodgson, she was out of town when she got a call from a neighbor ... Who asked if she'd hired a company to bulldoze her home -- one that she owned, but did not live in FWIW -- something that caught her by surprise, because she absolutely hadn't. While the chances of accidental demolition are slim — especially if your house looks well-kept, lived-in and you’re close with your neighbors — it’s always important to expect the unexpected when it comes to protecting your home. She also said she has happy memories of the house, describing it as “a fun place” where the family had “a lot of good times.” In particular, it reminded her of her husband, who died years ago.
Fox 5 reported they are investigating the issue and working to resolve the mistake. Hodgson recently visited the property to find a notice from the city of Atlanta threatening to issue citations because of the mess and for not filing the proper permits for the structure's demolition. FOX 5 first reported on Susan Hodgson, who found that her home was demolished accidentally by a construction company in early October. In a statement to WAGA-TV, a representative for You Call It We Haul It said the company was investigating and working to resolve the mishap. "It's been boarded up about 15 years, and we keep it boarded, covered, grass cut, and the yard is clean," Hodgson said. Hodgson hoped to hear back from the construction company or police within a month.
"It's just a grumbled mess. The whole house is tumbled in and a big ole mess. He didn't haul nothing off," Hodgson said. The home sits on Lakewood Avenue in southwest Atlanta and no one was living inside at the time. Cameras capture powerful demolition of bridge as it collapses into cloud of dust. "The house, it was a fun place. We always had a lot of good times here," Hodgson said. "I get what they are saying. I get that the house was boarded up and people probably would love to have it down. That's fine, but he didn't have permission to do it. That's the problem," Hodgson said. Hodgson said she doesn’t know what to do with the pieces of her family’s destroyed house.
